Artist's Statement

I see the artistic community and the resulting expressions as a giant conversation that I desired to be a part of for many years. I could hear the cacophony of voices surrounding me, and I was eager to add my two cents to the dialogue. Although I was familiar with the language, I was having difficulty finding a dialect that felt natural. Throughout my exploration, I saw common themes expressed in my work, even if the medium or subject matter varied greatly. Continually, I find myself drawn to the vibrant color found in nature, as well the flowing movement of various forms found in the environment. I am fascinated by detail, of things that may otherwise go unnoticed. My three forms of expression, watercolors, monotypes, and beadwork, manifest some or all of these qualities, each one representing a dialect of the artistic language that I can interchange when the mood strikes.

In my flower watercolors, I am attracted to translucence of the petals, and the way the contrasts of light and color dance on the surface. I remain amazed that a single blossom can convey so much movement within its form, even if the subject is perfectly still. I like to get very personal with the subject matter, creating a composition that has a slightly confrontational quality. Watercolor is the medium in which I paint flowers, and the flowers themselves become the medium in which I express my inner emotions, exposing the way I interpret the world and my place within it.

My monotypes tend to be an abstract representation of color, form, and movement. Not usually attempting to depict any one thing, I respond to the paints with child-like curiosity and playfulness. Lastly, the inspiration for my beadwork also relies on the key elements of color, form, movement, and detail.

I haven't narrowed down my expression into any one niche or medium, and believe that I will continue to change and grow as I explore my spirit and soul. I feel that as my art progresses, I become more articulate in the language in which I earnestly desire to communicate to others. My art makes me happy to make and to be in the presence of. It is therapeutic, and initiates self-reflection, causing me see the beauty within myself. I hope to impart a bit of that to the symphony of conversation singing around all of us.
